![]() UI: see my longer post above but to summarise clicking on the background to rotate the view! (was working if you setup your keymap “just so”, now broken!).a means to draw straight lines! (eg shift click between two points to drwa a straight line with the current brush!.“view based” widgets for that last point might or might not be re-usable for sequencer or compositing masks!.screen based texture masks (or stencils): My personal preferance is that they shouldn’t be too “in your face” whilst actually painting (perhaps ghosted in gray for positioning and disappear when the brush is in action? would probably need some on-screen ui widget for dragging around, rotating/scaling etc and option to tile or not!.the “brush mod” setting from zbrush (see my previous post).zbrush3.5 hard surface tools! (lots of combination style brushes, but also the “path” thing is interesting. ![]() z-brush “projection brush”: the surface under the brush gets pushed along its normal to conform to underlying geometry.sculptris “flatten” brush might be worth a look as it feels different to the blender one… maybe doing something nicer!.sculptris “crease” (combining pinch and draw with a subtractive “sharp falloff” curve).“combination brushes” (eg clay brush) flatten and draw? (i know we have that one, but there are many more!.It’d be interesting to see how the material re-factor treats this (if at all)įor those familiar with other sculpting tools, I’d like to hear what you think is the feature you miss the most from that tool when using Blender and what doesn’t work quite like you think it should (and also, if you think Blender works better, I definitely want to know that too!).Īpart from my UI notes above, when it comes to brushes: first I’d like to state how much I like what can already be done! it’s already a good flexible system that with combinations of textures, stroke and curve falloff cover most needs! I do think the notion of “common” and “advanced” settings is worthy of some discussion though! The above was supposed to be a short post to get the ball rolling and turned out longer than anticipated! “Anchored” and “Rake” need to be available for the “paint” modes too! not sure if we should be covering that here, but hey! I believe that this behaviour is why strokes in blender often look less crisp than in z-brush for example as the brush size on screen rather than image resolution limits the result on the mesh…(I understand that for procedurals you need to do samples, but surely image based needs to respect the res?) ![]() In my opinion the two above should have looked identical rather than being limited by brush size! there are the same number of polygons under the brush! One clear omission is the “brush mod” setting from z-brush ( many z-brush users aren’t too aware of it, but once you know it’s there it’s extremely useful!) for brushes like flatten and clay it modifies how deep into the mesh or high above the surface the brush effect occurs…įinally, there’s the handling of the anchor brush taking its resolution from the “brush size” setting rather than the screensize that it’s dragged out to ( or indeed, the source resolution of any image based texture!)Ĭompare the results in the following image: exact same brush and mesh, anchored stroke with the one on the left at brush size 20, the one on the right at brush size 200. It would also be nice to see a “brush stroke preview” (with varied pressure) like in photoshop… Perhaps the “curve” falloff settings could work well with more presets (and user defined presets!) in a “roll out” panel mirroring the “texture” selector… then a case could be made for more ui precedence! (this is currently not too viable with the “brushes as datablocks” paradigm… load a file from 2.49 for example and you end up having to append all your brushes, add new brushes and set their “data” to the brushes you just loaded!: now that many areas of blender use “presets” blender could do with some love storing brushes somewhere other than the. I know the latter is “anti blender design”, but … the current confusion is that all the settings are available all the time… “tool, stroke and curve” settings don’t need changing much if you have decent brush presets… “texture”, “size” and “strength” DO need quick access… ![]() “brushes” and “brush settings” (or “advanced settings” …or even a modal “edit brush”! ) This may be jumping the gun, but it seems to me that there is a case to be made for a two tier system: ![]()
